It’s often said that Local Government is the government closest to the people. So, why do people put their hand up to be a candidate for election? For Mansfield Councillor, Harry Westendorp, it was the opportunity to be a part of something greater than himself that attracted him to the role. Harry has chosen to make Mansfield Shire his home, and its people are his family. Last month, our leaders met with Cr Westendorp to talk about the elusive nature of leadership and its scarcity.

Here’s a short article from last year’s Mansfield Courier, written after Cr Westendorp stepped into his council role. Harry talks openly about his life and what has happened between his birth in the Netherlands, his childhood in rural Australia and his career. He explains what has brought him to this point where he is the newest Councillor for Mansfield Shire.
