What role do we each play in shaping stronger communities and a healthy democracy?
Our 2026 AVCLP cohort didn’t have to look far to explore this question, as our recent program day in Wangaratta brought together an outstanding line-up of leaders: former Federal Member for Indi Cathy McGowan AO, Rural City of Wangaratta Chief Executive Officer Matt Nelson, Mayor Irene Grant, Cr Allison Winters, Cr Dave Fuller and Alpine Shire Council Cr Gareth Graham.
The day’s conversations encouraged consideration of the kind of leadership our communities need, and the responsibility each of us holds in shaping it. “If not now, when? If not you, who?” sat alongside the reminder that progress comes through the courage to act, rather than simply admiring the problems before us.
We are incredibly fortunate to have such exceptional local leaders willing to share their insights, and also appreciated the opportunity for members of our Alumni to join us in the afternoon, adding another valuable dimension to the conversations.
