Like the earlier sessions in Tumut and Ournie, these conversations brought community members together with agencies including NSW SES, NSW Rural Fire Service, NSW Reconstruction Authority, Rural Adversity Mental Health Program, Australian Red Cross, Greater Hume Council and more.
Facilitated by Mary Hoodless, we heard lived experiences from past disasters alongside insights into how emergency arrangements work, the specific risks faced locally, the role of community members and volunteers, and ways to support mental health and wellbeing during and after crisis. A mock desktop scenario again put the learnings into practice, sparking discussion about what works well and where more attention is needed.
The final two sessions are taking place in Urana and Corowa next week, with an additional focus on personal preparedness to be delivered by Federation Council, including what to expect in the first 72 hours of a disaster and how to plan ahead.
