The 2025 Annual Program cohort recently travelled to Melbourne for a two-day study tour exploring government, democracy, and advocacy.
The Neighbourhood Justice Centre in Collingwood served as the primary venue, where Mary Crooks AO, Executive Director of the Victorian Women’s Trust, delivered the first session focused on second-order advocacy. Drawing on decades of experience in public policy and civic engagement, Mary challenged the cohort to think critically about power, voice, and the strategies used to influence change.
The cohort then visited Parliament House for a deep dive into parliamentary processes and regional representation. Welcomed by Community Engagement Manager Andres Lomp, they heard first hand from Wendy Lovell MP and Gaelle Broad MP about their roles, responsibilities, and experiences as regional Members for Northern Victoria. Committee Manager Igor Dosen shared insight into the work of parliamentary committees, while Deputy Clerk Dr Vaughn Koops explained the rhythm of a sitting week. The visit concluded with a behind-the-scenes tour led by John Fothergill.
The second day opened with a session on local government advocacy led by Rohan Leppert from the Municipal Association of Victoria. In the afternoon, participants explored adaptive leadership with Katy McDevitt from Leadership Victoria and continued their cohort-led discussions.
Through the tour, participants strengthened their personal connections and deepened their understanding of leadership, influence, and the pathways to creating change.
