All hands on deck in Tumut and Ournie

All hands were on deck in Tumut and Ournie last week, as we kicked off the first of six sessions centred on community readiness and response during times of disaster.

Facilitated by Mary Hoodless, we heard from community members about their lived experiences during past emergencies, and from stakeholders representing agencies and organisations including NSW SES, NSW Rural Fire Service, NSW Reconstruction, Rural Adversity Mental Health Program, Australian Red Cross, Snowy Valleys Council, and more.

Speakers shared insights from their work while inviting local knowledge into the conversation. Topics ranged from how emergency arrangements function, to the specific risks our communities face, the role of community members and volunteers, and how to support mental health and wellbeing during and after crisis. A mock desktop scenario put the learnings from each session into practice, highlighting what worked well and where opportunities exist for greater attention.

At the heart of it all was a focus on how we can better understand one another, strengthen communication, and work together in ways that reflect the realities on the ground. These conversations help build the relationships that underpin strong communities – the connections we rely on every day, and especially when disaster hits.

Thanks to everyone who came along and contributed, and to the NSW Reconstruction Authority for enabling this initiative.

Further sessions are taking place in Henty, Culcairn, Urana and Corowa, register via: https://bit.ly/sponvols
